Use Canvas's AI Quiz Generator to Build Assessments Faster

Tool:Canvas LMS
AI Feature:AI Question Generator (New Quizzes)
Time:10-15 minutes
Difficulty:Beginner

What This Does

Canvas New Quizzes has an AI question generator that can create multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions from a topic description or pasted text — directly inside your course, no copy-pasting from a chatbot required.

Before You Start

  • Your course uses Canvas LMS (check with your institution — Canvas is used by ~40% of US institutions)
  • Your course is set up with "New Quizzes" enabled (some institutions still use Classic Quizzes — ask your instructional tech team)
  • Time needed: 10–15 minutes to generate and review a full quiz set
  • Cost: Included in Canvas — no extra charge

Steps

1. Navigate to New Quizzes in your course

From your Canvas course homepage, click Quizzes in the left navigation. Click + Quiz button in the top right. Choose New Quizzes (not Classic Quizzes). Give it a name and click Build.

What you should see: The New Quizzes editor opens in a separate window with a blue "+" button to add questions. Troubleshooting: If you only see "Classic Quizzes," contact your Canvas admin and ask them to enable New Quizzes for your course.

2. Find the AI question generator

In the New Quizzes editor, click the Stimuli or Item Bank button, then look for a Generate Questions with AI option (may appear as a sparkle icon or "AI Generate" button near the question types). This feature rolls out in phases — if you don't see it, check Canvas's status for your institution or use the method in step 3 as an alternative.

Alternative if AI generator isn't available yet: Use ChatGPT to generate questions in the format "1. [question] a) b) c) d) Answer: [letter]" then import them using Item Bank → Import.

3. Describe what you want

In the AI generator input field, type: "Topic: [your topic]. Course level: [undergrad/grad]. Question type: multiple choice. Number: [10-15]. Focus on [comprehension/application]."

What to type for a political theory course: "Topic: Social contract theory (Hobbes vs. Locke). Course level: undergraduate. Question type: multiple choice. Number: 10. Include questions at both recall and application levels."

What you should see: 10 draft questions appear for you to review. Each has an answer and up to 4 options.

4. Review, edit, and add to your quiz

Review each question carefully. AI-generated questions occasionally have two plausible correct answers or discipline-specific errors. Click any question to edit it. Check all correct answer markings. Delete any questions that don't fit. Add them to your quiz with the Add to Quiz button.

5. Set quiz parameters and publish

Back in the quiz settings, set: point values, time limit, number of attempts, and availability dates. Click Save & Publish when ready.

Real Example

Scenario: You're teaching a week on cognitive bias in a behavioral economics course and need a 15-question reading quiz due before class discussion.

What you type: "Topic: cognitive bias including confirmation bias, anchoring, and availability heuristic. Course level: upper-division undergraduate. 15 multiple choice questions. Mix of recall definitions and application to financial decisions."

What you get: 15 questions including ones like "A financial advisor consistently recommends investments that match their prior beliefs. This is an example of: a) anchoring, b) confirmation bias, c) availability heuristic, d) loss aversion." Answer: b. You review, fix 2 that feel ambiguous, and publish in 20 minutes.

Tips

  • Generate 20% more questions than you need — it's faster to delete bad ones than generate new ones
  • After using AI-generated questions for a semester, identify which ones students find confusing and refine them; over time you build a high-quality item bank
  • Use the Canvas Item Bank to store and reuse approved questions across semesters — your quiz prep goes from 2 hours to 20 minutes once the bank is populated
