What you'll accomplish
Writing a grant proposal section from scratch takes 3–4 hours. With Claude as a drafting partner, first drafts take 30–60 minutes. You'll set up Claude Pro to draft specific aims sections, sharpen your significance and innovation arguments, and maintain consistent voice across a long proposal. Claude works best when you bring the ideas; it handles structure and language.
What you'll need
Go to claude.ai in your browser. Click Sign Up and create a free account. Upgrade to Pro ($20/mo) under Settings → Plan. The Pro plan gives you a 200,000 token context window — essential for uploading grant requirements and working on long proposals.
What you should see: The Claude interface with a message input area at the bottom.
Click Projects in the left sidebar (if available in your plan) → New Project. Name it "[Grant Name] Proposal." This keeps all your grant conversations together and lets you reference prior conversations.
Alternatively, start a new chat and paste your context at the beginning of each session.
Begin every grant session with a context block. Paste this at the start:
I'm a [your title] at [institution type] working on a grant proposal for [grant program, e.g., NSF CAREER, NIH R01, Spencer Foundation].
My research focuses on: [2–3 sentence description of your agenda]
My prior work includes: [2–3 key publications or projects in one sentence each]
The gap this proposal addresses: [1 sentence]
My proposed study: [1–2 sentences on what you plan to do]
I'll be sharing sections of the RFP and asking you to help me draft specific sections. Do not fabricate citations or data — ask me if you need specifics I haven't provided.
Why this matters: Claude performs dramatically better when it knows your voice, your research area, and what NOT to do (fabricate citations).
Copy and paste the relevant sections of the RFP directly into the chat, or type: "Here are the requirements for the [section] section:" and paste the text. Tell Claude: "Read these requirements carefully before we begin drafting."
Ask Claude to draft a specific section. The most useful starting point is usually Specific Aims (NSF/NIH) or Project Abstract — these force you to articulate your whole argument and are the sections reviewers read most carefully.
Prompt template:
Now draft the Specific Aims section based on my research context and the requirements.
Length: 1 page.
Structure: Opening paragraph establishing significance, 3 specific aims with brief rationale each, closing paragraph on impact.
Use the active voice and avoid passive constructions. Do not invent citations or data.
What you should see: A full Specific Aims draft that follows your research context and the program's requirements.
Read the draft. Mark what's strong (keep), what's off (fix), and what's missing (add). Then prompt Claude:
Iterate 3–4 times. Each pass takes 5–10 minutes.
When you've drafted multiple sections, paste them together and ask: "Read all these sections. Identify any inconsistencies in terminology, framing, or stated scope. List the issues." Claude will catch when you called your method "participatory action research" in one section and "community-based research" in another.
